Guy Martin got his 2014 road racing season underway in perfect style today with a hat-trick of wins at the Oliver’s Mount Spring Cup meeting, Scarborough. The tea-drinking Tyco Suzuki rider was in fine form around the 2.43-mile woodland circuit and duly romped to victory in the two Superbike races, winning the Ian Watson Trophy in the process, and the solitary Supersport affair.

The Lincolnshire rider has been productive in the off-season like never before, racking up 85-90 laps each day testing with the team in Spanish tests, as well as enjoying two day tests at both Magny Cours and Paul Ricard with the RC2L World Endurance team whom he’ll ride for again at the Bol d’Or on April 26/27. He’s also been spending time flat-tracking with youngsters Tom and Tim Neave.

Speaking to Bikesport News, Martin said “The bike’s are mint, the Metzelers are mint and I’ve had plenty of laps under my belt in pre-season so I can’t complain. The tests in Spain and France have gone really well so I’m just looking forward to the season now, especially the TT and the Bol d’Or in a couple of weeks time.”

In each of the 8-lap Superbike races at Scarborough it was the ‘General’ Lee Johnston who led in the early stages, holding onto the lead in the first until half race distance, but Martin was just biding his time and ended up winning both by comfortable margins. The second race was a more straight forward affair and once he hit the front half way round the first lap he never looked back.

Dean Harrison (RC Express Kawasaki) took second in the opening Superbike race, getting the better of both Johnston and Ivan Lintin (Taylor Lindsey Racing Honda) but in the feature Ian Watson race it was Lintin who prevailed in the battle for the runner-up spot as Harrison suffered with a bike jumping out of third gear.

In the Supersport race, it was young charger James Cowton who held onto the lead in the early stages before Martin took control on lap three eventually taking the win from Harrison, making his race debut on the Mar-Train Yamaha, by over five seconds, the Bradford rider overcoming a sluggish start to work his way through the pack. Cowton held onto third with Lintin in fourth.

Lintin’s strong day continued in the two Supertwin races with two comfortable victories on his Tigcraft Kawasaki, getting the better of the returning Ryan Farquhar (SGS International/KMR Kawasaki) on each occasion. Farquhar, having his first rides at Oliver’s Mount since July 2012, had his hands full keeping Cowton in bay but duly took two second places with Cowton and Stewart Smith Racing team-mate Jamie Hamilton third and fourth in each race.

Ian and Carl Bell were victorious in two poorly-supported F2 Sidecar races. - See more at: http://www.bikesportnews.com/news-detail.cfm?newstitle=Martin-takes-hat-trick-at-2014-Spring-Cup&newsid=11578#sthash.s3zLEuF9.dpuf
