Nine-time world champion Valentino Rossi has backed Britain's Scott Redding to perform well in his upcoming Ducati MotoGP test at Mugello with The Doctor saying he 'can be fast'.

Redding, who is currently fifth in the Moto2 standings, will join Andrea Iannone for the evaluation in Italy. The Gloucestershire teenager has been watched by Ducati for the last two years and his MarcVDS team are keen to make the step up to MotoGP - as is Redding because he is getting physically too big for his current class.

"I am very close with the Ducati guys for the future, they speak to me for advice about young riders, we spoke about (Andrea) Iannone and Redding. He is the English hope, after Cal. I think he has a good potential, he is a young guy and can be fast," said The Doctor at Laguna Seca.

Under new rules, Ducati can only supply four bikes for the grid in 2013 and two of those will go to the works team. It is not known yet if current incumbents Pramac or AB Cardion have options to run them again next season.
